Superintendent

As the Golf Course Superintendent, you will have responsibility for golf course maintenance, equipment repair & maintenance, club house grounds, landscaping and related structures and buildings (pump stations, comfort stations, etc.). You will also assist with hiring and training, and providing direction for team members within company set processes and guidelines. In conjunction with the Head Superintendent, you will be responsible for meeting or exceeding the established standards for guest satisfaction as well as labor cost control/management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Must be proactive in developing innovative ideas to facilitate the continual delivery of exceptional quality products and profit contributions to the company.
  • Daily implementation & adherence to Oki Golf universal standards.
  • Assist in maintaining a daily record log for weather, course conditioning, cultural practices, equipment maintenance, fertilizer and pesticide applications, etc.
  • Encourage, mentor, coach, train and develop team members to ensure their maximum value to Oki Golf so that the guest experience is realized.
  • Ensure proper safe work environment to include compliance with OSHA/WISHA and Oki Golf guidelines and standard operating procedures.
  • Interview and hire positions of the turf department (along w/ the head superintendent); equipment manager, irrigation and spray technician and all seasonal team members.
  • Lead by example. Set the benchmark of performance to the department in the areas motivation, sense of ownership, and dedication to quality of product.
  • Hold all team members accountable for their areas of responsibility.
  • Completion of administrative tasks such as scheduling, performance reviews, editing time for payroll functions in a timely manner.
  • Supervise team members by carrying out the responsibilities in accordance with Oki Golf policies and procedures. This will include planning, assigning and at times performing activities of team members supervised.
  • Implement new methods and procedures designed to minimize operational costs and maximize resources.
  • Schedule to proper business levels and within budgeted staffing guides.
  • Be able to work weekends and holidays, mornings and evenings as business demands.
  • Positive and proactive supervisory, leadership, management and coaching skills.
  • Possess good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to communicate on various levels to include team members, guests, vendors and contractors, at all times showing tact and diplomacy as a senior representative of Oki Golf.
Qualifications, Education, and/or Experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as an assistant superintendent.
  • Minimum 1 year experience with irrigation systems and components related to best practices in consideration of agronomics. Intimate knowledge of system functions (ie. programming, satellite functions, etc.)
  • Experience of managing a team of 10 or more.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree or two-year certificate in Turf Science, Landscape, Agronomy or similar field, or equivalent work experience. Restricted Pesticide License.
  • Ability to compute rates, rations, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volumes of cones, cylinders, etc. Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
  • Ability to calibrate sprayers, spreaders, scientific instruments, computer software, irrigation systems, etc.
  • Ability to multi-task while remaining focused on the key objectives of the property, department and position.
  • Ability to operate basic software including word processor, spreadsheets, e-mail and irrigation control software.
  • Must be comfortable and willing to “roll up the sleeves” and lead by positive example.
  • Be able to work weekends and holidays, mornings and evenings as business demands.
  • Independent decisions are made with sound judgment and are consistent with Oki Golf core values.
  • Basic understanding of preventative maintenance systems.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical operations of engines and hydraulics for guidance of equipment managers.

Assistant Superintendent

Summary

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for three distinct areas; product, people and profit. Product will include assisting the Golf Course Superintendent in Golf Course, maintenance facility, equipment repair and maintenance, club house grounds, landscaping and related structures and buildings (pump stations, comfort stations, etc.). People include assisting with hiring and training and providing direction for team members within company set processes and guidelines. Profit includes meeting or exceeding the established standards for guest satisfaction as well as labor cost control/Management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Analyze financial plans to spot trends, measure productivity and monitor progress.
  • Monitor fluctuations and trends in business volumes, to be used in short and long term forecasting.
  • Proactively manage the company’s assets, driving continual profit contributions to the bottom line as measured by monthly financial statements.
  • Analyze market and competition, adapt strategy to changing conditions.
  • Responsible for providing and instructing employees to give exceptional customer service by promptly responding to customer needs; soliciting customer feedback to improve service; while building and maintaining a long term guest relationship.
  • Prioritize and plan work activities, use time efficiently; plan for additional resources; set goals and objectives.
  • Manage difficult or emotional situations; respond promptly to customer needs; solicit customer feedback to improve service; respond to requests for service and assistance; meet commitments.
  • Ensure effective and ongoing training and development plan is in effect; specifically regarding effective and appropriate use of all confidential systems.
Additional Duties
  • Safely and properly operate fairway and rough mowers.
  • Mark the Golf Course for Golf Cart control, move cart barriers and replace worn or lost ropes / signs and mark hazard and drop areas.
  • Hand watering of greens and fairways.
  • Install forms and lay walks / paths using gravel and asphalt mixes.
  • Excavate and backfill trenches and ditches with hand tools.
  • Repair and replace pipe on irrigation systems.
  • Hold regular staff meetings and convey all relevant information throughout the Golf Course Facilities staff.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained in good working order.
  • Provide employees with the resources needed to resolve guest inquiries.
  • Recommend or initiate personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers, discharges and disciplinary measures.
  • Coordinate with the Marketing Department to develop Marketing Strategy and ensure a consistent image is being portrayed.
  • Monitor service trends by speaking with guests, reviewing written guest comment cards, and guest tracking information to ensure quality service standards are achieved.
  • Make informed business decisions by staying up to date with industry trends.
  • Resolve complaints made by patrons and/or employees in a timely manner.
  • Anticipate, identify and ensure customer needs are being met in the best possible way.
  • Resolve all service issues via written communication or phone calls to complete the ultimate satisfaction to the customer.
  • Recognize employees for demonstrating excellent service initiative with guests and fellow employees.
  • Maintain effective communication with the guests and fellow team members.
  • Responsible for knowing all events in the property.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and training.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Display sensitivity to Native American Culture.
  • Operate within the parameters of the Little Creek Human Resource Policies, Departmental Policies and all other applicable regulations.

  • AA Degree in Turf grass Management or related field, required.
  • BA Degree in Turf grass Management or related field, preferred.
  • 2 years working experience in Golf Course maintenance, seeding and maintenance practices for Golf Course Turf.
  • Experience in the planting, cultivating, pruning and caring of plants, shrubs and trees.
  • Experience in the use of fertilizers, herbicide and pest control; irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Experience in turf maintenance or related field, preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Class II Gaming License issued from the Squaxin Island Gaming Commission
  • Requires a Valid Washington State Driver License and must be insurable on the Tribe’s insurance.

SPR golf courses provide a high-quality golf experience for golfers. More than 200,000 rounds of golf are played annually at the four municipal courses and help is needed to smoothly run the grounds maintenance operations.

The Golf Course Technician performs specialized semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of golf course grounds and facilities. Duties may include mowing, irrigation repair, fertilizer and pesticide applications, aerifying, top-dressing, course rennovation, and related golf course maintenance operations consistent with accepted standards for the golf course maintenance industry.

Job Responsibilities
  • Mows greens greens, tees, fairways and roughs. cleans and rakes bunkers; maintains ball washers and related facilities; changes cup and tee placements. 
  • Operates mowers, tractor and gang mowers, aerifiers, trailered equipment, and small power equipment such as drills, chain saws, grinders and buffers, solder guns, air hammers, compressors, tapping machines, and other tools, equipment, and trucks used in golf course maintenance, construction, and repair work; performs minor mechanical repairs on such equipment. 
  • Operates golf course tractor with a front end loader attached and a bucket capacity of 1/4 yard or larger with attachments such as backhoe. 
  • Identifies turf diseases; takes soil samples; mixes and applies pesticides, fertilizers, algaecides, and herbicides; aerifies, seeds, top dresses turf, and lays sod; plants and maintains bushes and flowers. 
  • Constructs, installs, and repairs golf course sod according to design plans and diagrams. 
  • Adjusts mower reel units; checks for leaks in hydraulic lines; checks oil, gas, and hydraulic fluid levels; tightens nuts, bolts, and pulleys. 
  • Digs holes and trenches in order to maintain or construct irrigation and drainage lines; shores excavation; installs pipe and backfills excavation; repairs and maintains irrigation systems. 
  • Performs various semi-skilled tasks in plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry, concrete, and general maintenance work; these tasks are not at the journey level of any skilled trade, and are not subject to code inspection.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs drainage on non-potable irrigation pipe; threads, cuts, and lays irrigation pipe for new lines; removes old piping; flushes and removes debris and roots from drain lines. 
  • Adjusts automatic irrigation system controller to provide proper and timely irrigation at each watering location. 
  • Performs limited repairs, typically of an emergency nature, of mainline, laterals, valves, and heads down line from the double check valves pump and vacuum breaker. (Course crews will not work on potable water lines, appliances, or pumps.) 
  • Installs drainage, drain tile, rock pockets, and small catch basins. 
  • Manufactures tee mat pads by constructing forms, pouring, and finishing cement. Lays asphalt, patches holes in roadways, cart paths, and around facility buildings. (These are typically small quick-fix projects.) 
  • Performs various landscape work including installing railroad ties for the development of flower beds, raking, digging, tree planting, pruning bushes, cutting brush, and applying chemicals. 
  • Trims, prunes, and sprays trees; removes stumps; chips branches and grinds stumps; fells small to moderate sized trees. 
  • Changes light bulbs and fuses; manages central control irrigation system. 
  • Completes small interior and exterior painting projects including signs, graffiti items, benches, garbage cans, posts, and fences. 
  • Reads work orders and obtains needed supplies; completes forms and writes simple reports on work; maintains accurate records of time and materials used. 
  • Leads the work of intermittent Golf Course Technicians and employees in lower job classifications. 
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Three years of work experience directly related to the duties described above in a golf course environment.

Position Description

Under general supervision, perform diagnostic, maintenance and repair activities for a variety of grounds and general facility maintenance equipment such as small gas-powered hand tools, mowers, tractors and pumps; operate welding and grinding equipment; and order and inventory some equipment parts.

Job Responsibilities

Perform the maintenance and repair of all golf course equipment, maintain an inventory of parts and equipment, coordinate warranty and service agreements with outside venders. Perform the more complex diagnostic, maintenance and repair on specialized equipment including complex hydraulic equipment, repair and maintenance on utility vehicles, large and small tractors, triplex and walking green and tee mowers, multi-deck rotary mowers, large and small aerifiers, core harvesters, blowers, sweepers and small gas powered equipment. Check and diagnose charging, starting, and electrical systems, conduct voltage, resistance and capacity tests on lighting and other electrical systems. Grind reels, adjust reels and perform minor welding and fabrication.

Required Qualifications

Requires one year of trade school, community college or similar training in automotive, small engine or grounds equipment maintenance and repair work or two years of experience in repair and maintenance of diesel and gas equipment (or a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides an equivalent). A current, valid Washington State Driver’s License.

Pre-employment physical will be required prior to employment.

Summary

The Head Golf Professional is responsible for managing all golf and golf-related activities at the facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Create, promote and direct all golf activities.

Irrigation Technician

Description

Avalon Golf Club in Burlington is looking to hire an irrigation tech.

  • The individual would be responsible for the maintenance and repair of our existing irrigation system. Repairing heads and valves as well as pipe breaks, and leveling heads throughout the course.
  • In addition to the duties of keeping up with the irrigation system, the individual would help with the daily operation of the golf course, including typical maintenance duties like mowing, cup cutting, etc….
  • This employee would be under the supervision of both the superintendent and the assistant superintendent.
  • This individual should set an example of a strong work ethic that everyone else on the crew can admire and imitate.
  • Avalon currently and traditionally has had just one assistant superintendent. I have a hope that the person hired for this irrigation tech position could demonstrate qualities and a work ethic that may morph into the role and title of Second Assistant Superintendent after a couple of years.
  • Spring, summer and fall hours tend to average about 42 to 45 per week, while winter hours (December, January and February) about 30 hours on average. An average of about 40 hours per week for the year.
  • Golf course irrigation repair experience a must, although not necessarily as the irrigation tech.

Overall Description

The Shop Manager is responsible for the proper set-up, repair and efficiency of all commercial equipment brought into our Kent Service facility. This person organizes, leads, and controls the flow of work in a timely manner while ensuring quality work and repairs. This position provides a coordination between the service department and the customer under the supervision of the Service Manager and General Manager.
